Rangoli Art

Our Rangoli Art Using Coloured Rice

Rangoli is an art form, originating in the Indian subcontinent, inwhich patterns are created on the floor or the ground using materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand or flower petals. It is usually made during Diwali or Tihar, Onam, Pongal and other Hindu festivals in the Indian subcontinent. It is done to  celebrate change of season, harvesting and prosperity. During Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns on the floor by the front door to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their homes. Rangoli may have originated in India even before the origin of the Hindu epics, because rangoli is mentioned in the epics. During Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns on the floor by the front door to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their homes. Rangoli can be square, rectangular or circular.

In this example, we have used food colour to dye coarse rice.

This features Diwali lamps on the outside and mango fruit in the centre.

The final product is a bright and beautiful pattern that celebrates and welcomes everyone in the community.
